Gold

Gold is a very durable and timeless metal that will not rust, corrode, or tarnish. Jewellery made from gold is normally alloyed to increase its strength and produce a variety of colours. Most common colours are yellow and white. Because 24k gold is considered too soft for jewellery manufacturing, all of Shikari Diamonds jewellery is manufactured in either 14k or 18k, both white and yellow gold. The price of gold jewellery is dependent upon the purity of the gold or karat weight, as well as the design and craftsmanship of the piece of jewellery.

Gold Characteristics and Terms

Gold content is measured in Karats, which should not be confused with the term Carat, used to measure diamond weight. The K number specifies how many parts, by weight, of pure gold is contained in 24 parts of the alloy. The decision between 14k or 18k is a matter of personal taste and preference, with 14k having the advantages of added strength.

White Gold

White gold is an alloy of gold and small amounts of other precious metals. White gold can be either 14k or 18k, with 14k having the advantages of added strength. To give white gold its brilliant white lustre, in the final process of manufacturing white gold is rhodium plated. Rhodium is a shiny, white metal, which is extremely hard and durable. However, over time the rhodium plating may show signs of wear, revealing the slightly yellowish tint. Re-plating is a simple process that can be done to restore your jewellery's whiteness if needed.

Care for Jewellery

Proper care for your gold jewellery is important to maintain its lifelong beauty and value. Keep your jewellery away from harsh daily elements such as chemicals and chlorine and cleaning fluids. This will reduce daily abrasions and prolong gold's lustre.

To keep your gold jewellery clean, soak it in a mild solution of detergent free soap and water and wash it with a soft-bristled brush. Always store your jewellery separately in a soft fabric-lined bag or in the original jewellery box to avoid scratches or other damage. Be sure to check any diamond settings periodically for possible damage. If you see a loose prong, or if the setting looks out of line, immediately bring it to a professional for inspection.
